What Will I Learn?

• Understand stress and anxiety in Autism and why it occurs
• Know how to engage with your child on a deeper level of communication
• Understand clearly the difference between an Autistic mind and a Neurotypical one
• Assess and master key problem areas in social and communication issues in your child
• Understand the structure of CBT and WHY it helps Autism
• Your child will have a clear understanding of how their mind works
• Choose the right CBT method for your child and their abilities
• Your child will learn the basic tools to manage their own meltdowns and behaviour
• Both you and your child will be prepared for later transitions in life: school to college to work etc.
• You will also know how to identify negative thought patterns and when to apply the ABC Model and Tic Toc Methods of thought interference.
• You will learn about and work with Schemas and Thought Logs which are two key learning interventions used in CBT.

Requirements

• You will need to have a relationship with your child which allows you to communicate through conversation and interaction.
• You will need to be both willing participants and prepared to be creative in your approach to the exercises.

Target audience

• Who should: Parents with children who are at least 11 years old (this is because the exercises are through role play and conversation.
• This course is ideal for children and young people who lack social skills at the level they need to be at their age, but are able to follow simple verbal instruction.
• Young adults facing transitions from secondary school to college to independence (as this course covers the type of stressful environments they might face; appointments, exams etc)
• Your child will need to be either Aspergers or High Functioning Autism or at a level where they are able to attend mainstream school with support.
• This course is NOT for children at KS1 and/or primary school education. People who are not in a day to day living/educational environment with the young person.
• This course is NOT for children or young people who have non-verbal Autism or similar conditions.
