What Will I Learn?

  • Understand speedlights and control their exposure;
  • Apply off-camera flash lighting principles with confidence;
  • Get the best use out of the speedlight's inherent limitations;
  • Use the Apollo 28" effectively in a host of different situations, either as the only light source in an image, or together with natural light to create more complex lighting scenarios;
  • Apply basic post-processing techniques to further enhance their images.

Requirements

  • To take advantage of this course, students will need a camera that allows the use of external, off-camera lights (DSLR or mirrorless with hot-shoe or internal wireless trigger system), as well as a speedlight / strobe and respective triggering system.
  • Students will also need to have working knowledge of their camera, including how to set your exposure modes, shutter speed, aperture and ISO.
  • This course was designed around the Westcott Apollo 28" and accessories, but the principles still apply to any similar sized softbox.
  • Photo editing and processing software, such as Adobe Lightroom and / or Photoshop, will also allow the students to take more advantage of the post-processing chapters in the course.

Target audience

  • This course is ideal for photographers who are starting out on their off-camera lighting journey and are looking for a complete tutorial that takes them from pressing the "on" button on the speedlight to creating amazing images with an extremely simple but versatile tool.
  • This course is probably not for the advanced photographer who already knows all the principles related to off-camera lighting and how to use modifiers.
